It’s been a few weeks since I’ve started really keeping up with referral logs and I’ve seen how referral spam has gotten all out proportion. Taking into account the Top 50 “referrers” from May, only 141 of the 7935 referrals are not spam.
One rather industrious spammer sent 606 spam links my way.
Why is this such a problem?
Well for starters this type of spam skews your referral logs, pushing out legitimate referrers. You can’t make a proper analysis of visitor trends because of this.
What’s even worse is these spammers are using your valuble bandwidth. If 80% of your referrals are coming from spammers that’s 80% of your bandwidth being is wasted.
